4 new films enter UAE box office Top 10
It’s Valentine’s Day this weekend but the top ten this week is far from romantic as cinemagoers appear to have shown a preference for horror, action and singing rodents.\n

\n

Last week we focused on the Oscars but this week a Razzie award nominee has managed to find sympathy with UAE film fans as their new film, and the one they have won the nomination for, is one of the week’s highest new entries on the chart.\n

\n

Will it be Morgan Freeman crack the code to beating Avatar’s sweep at the box office? Will a Sex and the City star beat the Boogeyman? And will the Universal Soldiers be a match for the music loving chipmunks?\n

\n

The data here is courtesy of Italia Film International and covers the UAE box office up to February 3.\n

10. Sherlock Holmes\n

\n

This week Arabian Business reported that some UK producers were trying to negotiate a finance deal in the Middle East to make a film trilogy of the children’s classic Treasure Island and Robert Downey Jnr is top of their wish list to play Long John Silver. It is not surprising when you see the success he has had with both Ironman and Sherlock Holmes. His pairing with Jude Law as the cerebral crime stopping duo has certainly made big bucks in the UAE. As Holmes, Downey Jr goes up against the mystical arts of serial killer and occult ‘sorcerer’ Lord Blackwood as he tries to stop the evil Lord’s dark plans for world domination. Along the way he his helped by sidekick Dr Watson, a love interest played by Rachel McAdams and director Guy Ritchie.\n

09. Universal Soldiers 3: Regeneration\n

\n

Jean Claude Van Damme is back and UAE cinemagoers were obviously excited about the fact at the start when it was released but the reviews must not be too great as in its second week it has lost more than 70 percent of its audience. Plot wise, there is top-secret technology and genetically modified soldiers involved and a threat to blow up a Chernobyl nuclear reactor. And if that is not enough, Dolph Lundgren is also back to give 80s action fans a real treat.\n

08. Maatook Fi Bangkok\n

\n

The biggest selling Arabic film so far this year is a comedy starring Tariq Ali and directed by Mazen Al Jabaly and tells the story of Maatouk, a man who travels to Thailand for business and pleasure and soon realises he has bitten off more than he can chew. The film may have dropped over half its box office takings since last week but it is still managing to hold onto a top ten ranking.\n

07. Arthur & the Revenge of the Maltazard\n

\n

This animated sequel to Arthur and the Invisibles has what can only be described as an ‘eclectic’ mix of voice artists consisting of Disney teen favourite Selena Gomez, child star Freddie Highmore, acting legend Mia Farrow, chatshow king Jimmy Fallon, rappers Snoop Dogg and Will i Am and singer Lou Reed. The plot centres around Arthur’s quest to save Princess Selenia from the evil clutches of Emperor Maltazard.\n

06. Up in the Air\n

\n

Clooney is still coasting on the back of his second Oscar nomination and the buzz on this is growing, especially among UAE cinemagoers. Here he plays a management consultant who is trying to get to one million frequent flyer miles before his boss returns from holiday, finds his resignation letter and cancels his company credit card. There are love interests and moral life lessons thrown in along the way but essentially this is a showcase for Clooney’s charm and award winning ambitions.\n

05. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel\n

\n

The all-singing, all-dancing and all-talking Alvin [the headliner], Simon [the brainiac] and Theodore [the cute one] are a solid favourite with UAE kids and it is surely a cert that a third movie will be along in quick succession. In this installment, the hyperactive rodents end up going back to school. There they find out that the school music programme is under threat [cut backs are everywhere it seems in the recession]. By coincidence, there is also a battle of the bands competition taking place nearby with a prize of $25,000. Join the dots and guess what happens.\n

04. Boogeyman 3\n

\n

UAE film lovers are obviously not afraid of the Boogeyman as they have sent the third installment into the top five. In this installment, a college student sees her roommate commit suicide and becomes certain that the Boogeyman is real. Her dorm mates do not believe her and she must try to convince them before the evil entity takes over the entire campus.\n

03. Did You Hear About the Morgans?\n

\n

Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker star as an estranged couple who witness a murder and are relocated from New York City to a small-town in Wyoming as part of a witness-protection program. Let’s hope that Sarah J-P can live off the profit from the Sex & the City juggernaut as this has done her no favours and she has been nominated for a Rassie Awards – the antithesis to the Oscars – as Worst Actress of 2009 for her work in this movie.\n

02. The Code\n

\n

An aging New York thief invites a rival Miami thief to team up and steal some mysterious Russian Faberge eggs. The two have some previous history and a persistent Lieutenant is out to try and catch them. Will things do right? Will they get caught? “Never trust a thief” is the tagline so I’m guessing there will be as many layers to this plot as there are in a Russian doll. As the highest new entry this week many of you have been flocking to find out the answer to ‘The Code’.\n

01. Avatar\n

\n

Can anyone dislodge the might of Avatar?\n

\n

The new romantic comedy ‘Dear John’ managed to break the film’s run in the US but we feel the UAE’s love affair with all things blue is likely to continue as it is still managing to entice nearly a quarter of all those flocking to the flicks. The film tells the story of Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, who is sent to the planet Pandora and must battle a mix of environmental issues, corporate greed and love across against the odds. The film’s only big names of note are Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez, which shows that star power may not be the big driving force it once was. The film’s 3D is fantastic, but its figures are even more spectacular.\n
