New Year's resolutions: 6 apps to help you achieve your 2016 goals
There’s always an app for everything
What’s the one thing that’s always in your pocket, on your desk, or in your hand? You guessed it – your phone.\nAnd what’s in your phone? A world of life-enhancing applications – in other words, modern techniques to achieve your always-abandoned New Year's resolutions. Resolution: To be fit, fitter, or just to get off the couch
\nApp: FitStar Personal Trainer
\nBecoming fit is probably the number one most common New Year's resolution for everyone - but it’s also the first one that goes out the window two weeks in. My solution for that is personal training app, FitStar.
\nThe best thing about FitStar is that it features demonstrative videos for a variety of bodyweight workout programs. You get to choose the programs depending on your goals and fitness levels. It’s much cheaper than a gym membership and costs only $7.99 a month or $39.99 a year.
\nI personally trust FitStar because it was created by former NFL player Tony Gonzalez – and who doesn’t want a former athlete as a personal trainer?
Resolution: To eat healthy – or healthier
\nEating healthy is the second most-common New Year's resolution most of us make, but we don’t follow it for three reasons: we don’t know which food is healthy or unhealthy, we’re too lazy to cook healthy food, or we don’t enjoy healthy food.
\nThankfully, Lark has got the first reason figured out (more on how to solve the other reasons later).
\nLark is basically a personal weight loss coach and 24-7 house nutritionist. It tells you what to eat and what not to eat. It allows you to message it back and forth as it analyses your meals and provides suggestions for what to change about your diet. You’ll be eating healthier for longer.
Resolution: To enjoy eating healthy
\nYou know how I said that we don’t remain eating healthy for three reasons, among which are being too lazy to cook healthy food and not enjoying healthy food?
\nWell we’ve found an app that solves both of these issues. Epicurious teaches you home cooking, in a fun and interactive way, for healthy recipes. Why does it solve your problems? The recipes are dubbed “mouth-watering” by most of its users, even those who have a knack for fast food.
\nThe recipes are sorted in different categories and their recipes can be added to a featured “shopping list” for the next time you visit the supermarket.
Resolution: To save money – or avoid end-of-the-month bankruptcy
\nWe’ve all spent a fortune during the holidays – be it on shopping or going out. Here’s the thing though: we probably spend a fortune on things we don’t need to be spending a fortune on. That’s exactly why Mint is a must-have app if you’re as financially hopeless as I am.
\nDubbed the “Beyoncé” of personal finance apps, Mint keeps track of all your financial activity from restaurant bills to savings. Every transaction is automatically recorded and categorised - but that’s not the best part.
\nIt also makes note of your spending patterns and creates a personal budget for you. If you’re using it on an iPad, it even forms graphs to give you visual representations of your net worth and cash flow.
\nIt’s also password-protected and can be deactivated from the Mint website in case your phone is lost or stolen. Also – it’s free!
Resolution: To sleep better
\nApp: Sleeping Cycle Tracker, Smart Alarm Clock & Sleep Diary
\nMillionaires don’t swear by sleep for no reason. Sleep is vital for wellbeing, productivity, and happiness. So if it’s not on your New Year resolution list, it should be.
\nAnd so should the Sleeping Cycle Tracker app. Its name says it all: It’s a sleep cycle tracker, alarm clock, and sleep diary all in one.
\nThrough different engaging ways, it monitors your sleeping patterns to improve any struggles you face, monitors your bedtime habits to pick up on any that influence your sleep, and features new alarm sounds to help you wake up feeling more refreshed. It even reminds you of when of you need to sleep to get enough sleep for a following working day.
Resolution: To leave procrastinating behind
\nApp: Pomodoro Timer
\nProcrastination: the silent killer of all dreams – okay, I might be exaggerating, but am I?
\nI mean, how many plans were cancelled, goals unattended to, and ambitions abandoned because of procrastination? Luckily, there’s an app to tackle that.
\nPomodoro Timer curbs your procrastinating ways by allowing you to set working time and break times for every task in your day. Once you’ve successful followed several rounds of your pre-planned timings, it even grants you extra-long bonus breaks.
