Top 20 universities for producing billionaires
The majority of the top educational institutes are from the US
16 out of the top 20 billionaire schools are in the United States, but higher education is not a prerequisite to achieving billionaire status as this year’s Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census shows. 35 percent of the 2,325 billionaires in the world have not obtained a tertiary-level degree. Among those billionaires who hold a tertiary-level degree, 42 percent graduated with a bachelor’s degree, 26 percent have a master’s degree, 21percent finished their MBA, and 11 percent attained a PhD. 25 billionaires obtained their bachelor's degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, making it the top university in the world in terms of number of billionaire undergraduate alumni. Harvard University produced 22 billionaires, but if you include notable university dropouts Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, then the revised total is 24. Other American Universities on the top 10 list are: Yale University, with 20 billionaire alumni and the University of Southern California with 16 billionaire graduates. Princeton University, Cornell and Stanford are all tied with an equal number of 14 billionaire alumni per university. And with 12 billionaire alumni, India’s University of Mumbai has the most billionaire graduates of any university based outside the US. The University of California, Berkeley produced the same number of 12 billionaires. Followed by two non-US based universities - London School of Economics and political science and Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia - which have 11 billionaire alumni each. University of Texas, Dartmouth College and University of Michigan are all tied with an equal number of 10 billionaire alumni per university. New York University comes in the fifteenth position with 9 billionaire graduates, which is equal to the numbers produced by Duke University. Columbia and Brown University are also tied with an equal number of 8 billionaire alumni each. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) produced 7 billionaires in total. And the very last university on the top 20 list is Switzerland’s ETH Zurich with a total of 6 billionaire alumni.
