The Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary (RAKWS) on the outskirts of Dubai, which is Dubai's only desert wetland, occupies about 2.4 square miles on the banks of Dubai Creek and comprises of mudflats, lagoons, pools, and mangroves. With The UAE's accession to the Ramsar Convention in 2007, RAKWS has become the emirate's first Ramsar wetland site - Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention.
