Unconventional honeymoon getaways for summer
Try a honeymoon destination that’s not Paris or Rome
We don’t have a problem with popular honeymoon destinations such as Paris or Rome, but we think there’s a whole list of impressive locations that are just as romantic. Here are the best ones for this summer: Amalfi Coast: Italy is an obvious choice for couples, but cities such as Rome and Florence are typical options when it comes to romantic getaways. So we recommend somewhere a little less known to foreigners: the Amalfi Coast. The 50-kilometre stretch of coastline along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula is filled with small beaches and pastel-coloured fishing villages. Sounds good enough for us. Hintertux: Fancy a winter getaway in summer? Head down to Austria’s Hintertux, which remains open from May 14 to October 8 for summer skiing. It has several cosy hotels and chalets of which some are for adults only. We don’t know about you but we could use a break from the summer heat so we like this option. There are other activities available too such as mountain biking and hiking – but we prefer the spas in the chalets, thanks. Kyoto: If there is one romantic city in Japan, it’s Kyoto. Formerly the imperial capital of Japan, it is situated on Honshu Island and is filled with large gardens, imperial palaces, and traditional wooden houses. If you’ve ever watched the movie Memoirs of a Geisha, you will know what we’re talking about. Prague: the capital of Czech Republic in a must see even if you’re not travelling for your honeymoon. Because it was founded during the Romanesque time and developed by the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque eras, it has really impressive architecture and art. One great attraction in the city is Prague Castle, once home to Bohemian kings and now the official residence of the country’s president. Monte Carlo: If you want a romantic and lively honeymoon destination, we recommend Monte Carlo for its beautiful nature and famous nightlife scene. And if you get bored, you can just cross over to the French town of Beausoleil or the western border of Italy which is just 8km away. Dubrovnik: Croatia has become a popular tourist destination because of its clear beach waters. The city of Dubrovnik is especially great for couples because it fronts the Adriatic Sea and has plenty of ancient fortresses lining its cliffs. It’s known for its Old Town which was completed in the 16th century and has several palaces that are worth seeing. Orkney: Scotland’s green-topped islands and sandstone cliffs have to be seen at least once in a lifetime. And that can be done on your honeymoon in the Orkney Islands, once strongly influenced by the Vikings. If you like ancient standing stones and pre-historic villages as well as out-of-this-world costal scenery, Orkney is the place for you. Harbour Island: Pink sand? Yes please. That’s what you’ll find in the Bahamas’ Harbour Island. Loved by celebrities such as Mick Jagger and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, it’s the perfect island for fans of relaxing getaways. We’re talking turquoise waters and an array of water sports. Symi: If Greek islands are not for romantic honeymoons, we don’t know what is. Symi is our recommendation because it’s slightly less crowded with tourists. Unlike Santorini’s white and blue palette, Symi is filled with pastel-coloured houses and chic little boutique hotels. It also has tiny beaches accessible only by boat, so great for privacy. It’s always known for having great food.
