We Like: Lulu Guinness’s kooky bags
“Fashion is meant to be fun” – Lulu Guinness, who has opened a store in Dubai
Lulu Guinness’s first store in the Middle East just opened in Dubai’s Souk Madinat Jumeirah for the brand’s 25th anniversary and we’re loving its kooky 2014 collection. Lulu founded Lulu Guinness in 1989, and her intention was always to be slightly outrageous and push the boundaries. Based on the idea that “Fashion is meant to be fun”, she designed her first bag in the basement of her London home and it received praise from leading fashion industry figures. Today Lulu still lives by the motto of her hero, Surrealist artisan and fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli’s ‘Dare to Be Different’, and the brand’s central motif, the distinctive Dali-esque lips clutch, remains the brand’s staple accessory, transporting the Surrealist art movement into mainstream popular culture. Every bit as involved as day one, Lulu takes pride in having a huge input in the layout and design of each and every store, aiming to create a destination where customers can fully immerse themselves in the wonderful world of Lulu. The new 280 sq ft retail space in Dubai mirrors the brand’s globally distinctive identity with a black and white colour scheme, and a hint of her signature red hue. The Fall/Winter 2014 collection sees its main inspiration drawn from artist Henri Matisse’s paper cut-outs whose bold and simple artworks were the basis for Lulu’s earlier designs. Lulu Guinness comments: “I am so excited to be launching my new store in Dubai and hope that women in the Middle East love my collections just as much as I do. I like to think my bags combine glamour, a good sense of humour and practicality, three traits which I think will resonate with the Middle Eastern market.” Lulu’s distinctively British style is displayed across her range of bags and accessories, from her signature lips to the Kooky Cat and Doll Face range. Celebrities spotted showcasing one of Lulu’s creations include Kate Moss, Katy Perry and British model Agyness Deyn.
