Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has met with King Abdullah II of Jordan, at Al Diyafa Palace in Makkah, on the sidelines of the quartet meeting, to discuss means of supporting Jordan.
Sheikh Mohammed wished continuous security, stability and progress for the Kingdom of Jordan and its people. He also stressed the significant role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to maintain security and stability of the region.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait have offered $2.5bn in aid for Jordan to ease its economic crisis following anti-austerity protests in the country.
Jordan attributes its economic malaise on regional instability and the influx of hundreds of thousands of refugees from war-torn Syria. The country is reliant on donors and faces an uphill struggle to fix what the World Bank says are its “weak growth prospects” this year, while 18.5 percent of the working age population is unemployed.
The two sides discussed how to reach a formula that will help achieve the aspirations of the peoples of the region and support their development plans. Discussions also centred on tackling the overall political and economic developments in the Arab region.
