Dubai’s seventh taxi franchise – and its first Chinese taxi firm – began operations on Wednesday, bringing an additional 100 taxis to the emirate’s fleet of cabs.

The firm, Oneroad Taxi, plans to expand its fleet to at least 2,000 vehicles by 2020, including limousines, ladies and special needs taxis.

“The cooperation between the UAE and China is improving and Dubai has a big and growing market with opportunities to invest,” Oneroad’s general manager is quoted as saying in Gulf News. “We would like to add value to the taxi service here and represent the best of China and the UAE.”

The initial 100 vehicles is made up of Toyota Camrys. In the future, the firm plans to introduce Chinese-made Hongqi H7 and H5 luxury vehicles for its limousine services.

Additionally, Luo told the newspaper that the company is working to develop a taxi booking app, which is expected to go live over the course of the next few weeks.

The new taxis are part of a larger Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) effort to increase the taxi fleet ahead of the expected increase in demand associated with Expo 2020 Dubai.

“The demand for taxis is increasing and we are gradually increasing the fleet in the run-up to Expo 2020,” said Mohammad Abubaker Al Hashemi, director of business planning at the RTA’s Public Transport Agency. “More taxis will be added next year.”

Al Hashmi said that 2,500 taxis will be dedicated to the event.

With the additional 100 taxis from Oneroad, there are currently a total of 10,834 taxis operating in Dubai.
