Abu Dhabi's toll system to be activated during peak hours on January 2

No fees will be levied during off-peak hours, Fridays or officially sanctioned holidays.

Abu Dhabi’s toll system will be activated on January 2 during peak hours in a bid to reduce traffic congestion, according to the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and Integrated Transport Centre (ITC).

DMT’s peak hours are from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm from Saturday to Thursday.

Privately-owned vehicles passing through the toll gates will be charged AED4, with daily charges capped at AED16 per vehicle. The fees will be deducted from the driver’s account.

No fees will be levied during off-peak hours, Fridays or officially sanctioned holidays.

ITC will implement the Abu Dhabi Toll Gate System on four gates located at Abu Dhabi’s four main bridges: Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Sheikh Khalifa Bridge, Al Maqta Bridge and Musaffah Bridge.

Monthly payments will be limited to AED200 for the driver’s first vehicle, AED150 for the second vehicle and AED100 for third vehicles. Exemptions are limited to one vehicle per applicant.

Emirati senior citizens and people of determination – as well as retirees and limited income citizens – are exempt from paying the toll fees.

A number of other vehicles – such as towed vehicles, public buses and school buses – are also exempt from the tolls, as are official vehicles belonging to the police and armed forces.

As part of its plans, DMT and ITC have expanded the emirate’s public transport network, with 47 regional trips added to Abu Dhabi City, as well as 43 on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge coming from Al Shahama and Yas Island, and an additional 104 trips through Al Maqta Bridge from Musaffah, Bani Yas and Al Nahdha.
