Mubadala's National Reference Laboratory ramps ups Covid-19 testing

The facility can now conduct 6,000 tests each day

Mubadala's National Reference Laboratory ramps ups Covid-19 testing

The Mubadala-owned National Reference Laboratory (NRL) has increased its daily Covid-19 testing capacity from 3,500 to 6,000, the company announced on Wednesday.

The lab’s ramping up of testing comes as the “UAE government identified widespread and accurate testing a proven effective measure to curb the spread of Covid-19,” the company said in a statement.

NRL is one of only a number of labs in the UAE that perform Covid-19 testing in a biosafety level 3 facility.

“When the situation arose, NRL rapidly implemented a test method validation and developed a comprehensive workflow for onsite Covid-19 testing to perform accurate and rapid polymerase chain reaction, PCR, testing for Covid-19.”

Amid the pandemic, the lab – which employs a team of over 200 lab technicians and 14 pathologists and clinical scientists – is operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

According to Oubeisi, the NRL is working with a number of academic institutions in the UAE to fast-track research projects related to Covid-19.

“Since research and findings on this topic are evolving daily, NRL is doing everything it can to positively contribute and stay at the forefront of this research so that it will be able to play its part in supporting the UAE government,” he said.
