Bahrain's new result service is available in both English and Arabic
Bahrain has become the first country in the world to offer the results of Covid-19 tests by WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, the government announced on Thursday.
The announcement comes as governments and organisation across the world experiment with their own chat platforms, including New Zealand, Singapore, and the World Health Organisation.
Bahrain’s result service – which is available in both English and Arabic – uses a chatbot to deliver up-to-date information on the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, and provides links to YouTube tutorials and the country’s official Covid-19 ‘BeAware’ app.
The free chat service has been built using the WhatsApp Business API and Infobip’s global communication platform.
“We are working to reach a bigger and wider community in our health efforts to combat the spread of Covid-19,” said Dr. Waleed Al Manea, a spokesperson for Bahrain’s Health Ministry.
Last month, Bahrain – which is fifth in the world for testing rates – launched a dedicated tracking app for confirmed cases, with those in isolation required to wear tamper-proof bracelets monitoring their location.
A quarter of the country has so far downloaded the ‘BeAware’ app, which alerts users if they come into contact with an active case.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Bahrain has reported 5,816 cases of Covid-19, including 10 fatalities.
