An American jailed for life for attempting to sell industrial secrets has had his sentence upheld by an appeal court in Qatar.
John Willis Donez, an employee of Qatar Petroleum, was caught “attempting to sell highly sensitive economic information to an Asian country bordering the Gulf” according to local daily Al-Raya, in a report quoted by AFP. The country in question was not named in the report.
“A court of appeal confirmed the life prison sentence against an American spy” the paper said.
Donez was attempting to collect an envelope stuffed with cash as payment for information when he was caught by an undercover police officer posing as an embassy official in 2005. Officers found a CD containing sensitive information regarding an oil field in the north of the country during a search of his home.
He was convicted of industrial espionage and given a life sentence, launching an appeal in February.
