A senior opposition figure in Bahrain has been sentenced to six months in jail after being convicted of disrupting the Gulf state’s elections held in November.
Sayed Jameel Kadhim, a senior figure in the Al Wefaq National Islamic Society political party, claimed parliamentary candidates were being bribed to stand for office.
He made the claim in a comment posted on Twitter in October, leading up to the November poll.
On Tuesday, the Lower Criminal Court found him guilty of disrupting the elections and ordered him to pay a BD500 fine on top of his jail sentence, Gulf Daily News reported.
His lawyer, Abdullah Al Shamlawi, reportedly said he would appeal against the conviction.
