The Qatar government has joined forces with Switzerland and Singapore on a global plan to bring academics, scientists, media and business people together to “brainstorm” ways of overcoming the current economic crisis.
The Global Cooperation Project, which will encourage more joined up thinking between governments, was launched at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday, according to Qatar daily The Peninsula. “The crisis has underlined the dangers that surround us all. It has become very clear to us that we all are interdependent and that we must all work together to face the challenges of the 21st century,” Qatar’s prime minister Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani told 2,500 delegates, including 40 world leaders, attending the forum.
The resaerch project will bring a wide range of professional and business groups together with government representatives to develop guidelines rthat will belp mend global economic bodies and suggest improvements to inter-governmental cooperation.
Methods to “repair the flaws and cure the ailments” of global financial systems and prevent more “catastrophic consequences” in the future would be defined, Al Thani added. “We must ensure that international laws and legislation are implemented in order to avoid chaos,” he said
The project also address issues such as climate change, energy security, food security, terrorism and proliferation of nuclear weapons, the conference heard.
Recommendations will be presented at the forum’s 40th annual meet in Davos in January 2010.
