A women-only ‘telecoms complex’ comprising 40 mobile phone shops is to be built in Riyadh, an official said.
A consortium of investors from Saudi Arabia is reportedly leading on the plans, which come on the back of the kingdom’s drive to ‘Saudise’ the telecoms sector to create more jobs for nationals.
Since June 6, stores selling mobile communications devices have had to ensure that at least 50 percent of employees are Saudi citizens. The requirement will rise to 100 percent by September 3.
The government has launched training programmes for Saudi men and women so they are qualified to take on new jobs in the sector.
The strategy is also expected to help increase the number of Saudi women in the workforce.
The all-female telecoms ‘complex’ – to be located in the Ghurnatah district – will contain more than 40 mobile phone sales and maintenance stores, according to a report in Arab News.
The investors have received financial support from Saudi Arabia’s Human Resources Development Fund, as well as a package of training programmes from the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation, it quoted ministry of labour official Abdulmunim Al Shihri as saying.
Transportation will be provided to help the female staff travel to and from work each day.
Al Shihri was quoted as saying the complex would benefit from “high productivity rates” among women, while allowing women to work in a secure environment.
