Jordan hits out at “meddling” in Syrian affairs

Foreign Minister said Amman has no plans to recall its Ambassador in Damascus

Jordan has no plans to withdraw its ambassador from Damascus and is against any “meddling” in internal Syrian affairs, according to the kingdom’s foreign minister.

While Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait recalled their ambassadors from Syria in August last year, Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said his government has no plans to follow suit.

However, he told the parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee that “keeping the Jordanian ambassador in Damascus does not necessarily mean that Jordan endorses what is going on in Syria.”

Judeh also hit out at any proposed military intervention in Syria and he said Jordan was “against meddling in the internal affairs of any Arab country and we reject foreign military intervention in Syria and abide by the Arab consensus in this respect,” the state-owned Petra news agency reported.

Judeh said the Amman government was “against violence and support stopping bloodshed,” and was closely monitoring events in Syria.

In an apparent show of support, Judeh told parliamentarians he is would be attending “the meeting of the friends of Syria,” which is due to take place in Tunis on Friday.
