Kuwaiti detainees slit arms in protest over ‘illegal’ detention

About 80 prisoners claim they are still being held despite having completed their jail terms, some as much as 18 months ago

Scores of detainees in Kuwait have reportedly slit their arms in protest at not being released despite completing their sentences.

About 80 prisoners at the Talha Deportation Center cut themselves and screamed “save us”, Arabic daily Al Rai reported.

The prisoners claim they have completed their jail terms – some as much as 18 months ago – but have not been released due to negligent administrators.

They fear they will be deported rather than allowed to return to Kuwaiti society.

It is usual for expats in Kuwait, and other Gulf states, to be deported after completing jail sentences.

Authorities have not commented on the report.
