The Kuwaiti government has agreed to compensate nationals holding driving licences with 75 litres of petrol per month for the hike in prices despite rejection from lawmakers, revealed National Assembly speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanem at a meeting with the Prime Minister and Cabinet members yesterday.
Al-Ghanem said data showed the average monthly consumption per driver is 220-240 litres of which the government will provide 30 percent free to Kuwaitis who drive, reported Kuwait Times.
However, he said the compensation decision, which was demanded by the NA, will not apply to expats, who will have to pay the new petrol prices which took effect in September.
Al-Ghanem added the current set amount will be revised on a monthly basis as part of a “partial liberalization” plan of petrol prices. He said the free amounts of petrol as well as petrol prices will vary monthly in accordance with international oil prices.
He said expat drivers could end up paying higher prices than the current ones.
Furthermore, the civil service commission yesterday revealed it reduced housing allowance for expat teachers in the public sector from $500 (KD150) monthly to $200 (KD60).
