One-third of expats working in Oman do not have an academic qualification, new statistics show.
The Times of Oman reports that new figures released by National Centre of Statistics and Information (NCSI) show that one out of every three working in the Sultanate does not have an academic qualification.
“Till the end of May 2014, there were 1.5 million expatriates working in Oman, and one out of every three did not possess an academic qualification. Between 2009 and 2014, there was an increase of 7.9 percent in the number of expatriate workers,” says the NCSI report.
The September statics show that there are 595,396 Indians, 524,660 Bangladeshis and 216,477 Pakistanis working in Oman.
Of the 1,541,430 expat workers, only 97,853 possess a university degree or above, with a total of 57,527 expats working in the government sector. The major of expat workers – 44 percent – are employed in the construction sector.
“Around 30.2 percent of workers in Ministry of Health (MoH) are expatriates, the highest as compared to any civil sector in Oman in 2014,” the report said.
The report also shows that one in ten of every Omani is employed in the private sector.
Forty percent of Omanis are employed, five percent are jobseekers, with the remaining 55 percent made up of students, those above employment age and those who don’t wish to work.
