Cleaners across Saudi Arabia are preparing to strike and authorities are on standby to respond, according to a report from the kingdom.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs (MMRA) has drawn up an emergency plan to keep towns and cities clean in the event of a strike, Saudi Gazette said, citing a report in Makkah Arabic daily on Saturday.

The contingency plan includes enlisting the help of members of the public, including schools, colleges, sports clubs and scouts, to clean municipalities.

And citizens and businesses have been instructed to minimise garbage quantities by cutting down on consumption, the report said.

However, the report did not state the reasons behind a possible cleaners’ strike.

Last month, Saudi Arabian media reported that female cleaners in the Eastern Province had decided to go on strike over low wages.

It is not clear to which region the latest strike warning refers.
