The UN Security Council will come together for an emergency meeting on Monday, following a request by the UAE.
The purpose of this meeting is to address a call from the council’s Arab representative for a binding resolution, compelling Israel to agree to a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
On Friday, approximately one hour after Israel initiated its expanded military actions in Gaza, the UN General Assembly, consisting of 193 member states, voted in favour of a humanitarian pause with 120 countries supporting the motion, 14 opposing it, and 55 nations abstaining.
“The UAE requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council as soon as possible, in light of Israel’s announcement of “expanding its ground operations” in Gaza,” the UAE Mission to UN said in an X post.
However, it’s essential to note that the General Assembly, which represents all UN-recognised nations, lacks the authority to enact binding resolutions, a prerogative held by the 15-member Security Council.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its statement, highlighted the significance of safeguarding civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law, international agreements designed to protect civilians and their human rights.
It also highlighted the necessity to prevent civilians from becoming targets during times of conflict.
UAE condemns Israel’s ground operations in Gaza
On Sunday, the UAE condemned the Israel ground operations in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire.
This resolution calls for a “humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza and the cessation of hostilities, representing a key move towards de-escalation, the preservation of peace, and the protection of civilian lives.
The Ministry also stressed the need to establish humanitarian access routes and facilitate the immediate, secure, sustainable, and unobstructed delivery of humanitarian assistance to the affected areas.
