UAE Green Visa: Guide and how to apply for the freelance, self-employed visa

New UAE Green Visa rules came into effect earlier this month. Here’s how to begin the application process

As part of a slew of new rules aimed at attracting and retaining talent and skilled workers from all over the world, the UAE has implemented a 5-year Green Residence visa, which will boost flexibility of the job market and will foster a high sense of stability among UAE residents and families.

The new 5-year Green Residence visa will be aimed at exceptional talents, skilled professionals, freelancers, investors, and entrepreneurs, without the need of a sponsor or employee.

Green Residence visa holders will receive benefits to sponsor the residence of family members.

Green Visa eligibility

Freelancers or those who are self-employed with proof of a bachelor’s degree or specialised diploma and a freelance permit/self-employment permit from MoHRE qualify for the Green Visa, the evidence of annual income of at least AED360,000 for two years, or proven financial solvency throughout the individual’s stay in the country is required.

For skilled employees, a valid employment contract, classification in the first, second or third occupational level as per MoHRE, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a minimum salary of AED15,000.

For investors or partners, approval of the investment and proof of investment is required and approval of the competent local authorities.

Green Visa benefits

The Green Visa permits the holder to sponsor children, spouses and first-degree relatives.

Ability to sponsor their male children up to 25 years (previously 18 years), with no age limit for unmarried daughters

Children of determination (those with special needs) are granted a residence permit, regardless of their age.

Overstay period after visa cancellation or expiration will be six months.

Overseas applicants are eligible for a 60-day entry work permit for visa process.

Green Visa cost

AED335.75 for visa application.

For status change within the country, an additional amount of AED650 will apply.

Medical test and Emirates ID costs are additional.

Applicants can apply for the Green Visa using GDRFA-Dubai Smart Application. Here are the steps they would need to follow:

  • STEP 1 – Download the GDRFA-Dubai application through the authorized stores: Apple store/Play store or visit www.gdrfad.gov.ae
  • STEP 2 – Register a new user account (in case there is no account registered)
  • STEP 3 – Select the required service – Issuance of entry permit for green residence under Entry Permissions
  • STEP 4 – Select relevant subcategory: Skilled worker, investor, partner or freelance work
  • STEP 5 – Attach the required documents
  • STEP 6 – Pay the fees due for the service
  • STEP 7 – Submit the request

According to the GDRFA website, the applicant will receive a text message and e-mail regarding application status. In case of missing documents, the applicant will be notified to upload the required documents within 30 days, automatic request cancellation will occur if the required documents are not updated within the time period.

Applicants can also apply for UAE’s Golden Visa through AMER Centre. Here are the steps they would need to follow:

  • STEP 1 – Head to one of the service branches of the Amer Centres
  • STEP 2 – Select the required service at the receptionist
  • STEP 3 – Submit the required documents to the service employee
  • STEP 4 – Checking documents
  • STEP 5 – Pay the fees due for the service
  • STEP 6 – Submit application

Once the application is approved and process is completed, the visa will be sent via email.
