UAE urged to impose limits on expat boat ownership

Low-paid workers should not be allowed own a boat, according to FNC member

The UAE should ban lower income expat workers from owning a boat, according to FNC member.

Hamad Al Rahoomi (Dubai) said the Minister of Public Works and National Transport Authority should impose a ban on blue collar expat workers from buying boats, according a report in The National.

Al Rahoomi said the current boat-licensing requirements in the UAE make in relatively easy for low-paid workers to buy a boat, who are then able to compete with Emirati fishermen and rent out boats for tourist rides.

“If an accident happens tomorrow and we lose tourists, then we are [in trouble],” he said.

Al Rahoomi said boat owners should have a reasonable income, be able to swim and have a limit imposed on the amount of fish they catch.
