Portsmouth chairman Sulaiman Al Fahim has taken on Russian chess legends Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparo in an exhibition match in Valencia, just hours before the pair began their official duel.

The match between Karpov and Kasparo marks the 25th anniversary of the first encounter between Karpov and Kasparov, the epic five-month struggle for the chess world championship in 1984.

Fahim – who is head of the UAE Chess Federation and at the age of five was ranked the world’s fifth best player in his age category – said the meeting was a “dream come true.”

“It was very exciting for me to meet these two real legends of the game,” he told Arabian Business.

Fahim made his appearance shortly before heading for London, for a meeting with Portsmouth fans. “That will probably be more heated that this encounter,” he said.
