Artist Hend Al Mansour is a new face in the Power List, debuting at No.68.
Though an expat Saudi American, she hasn't strayed far from her roots, focusing the majority of her work on women in the Islamic world. Her art uses calligraphy, Islamic ornamentation, architecture, henna and colourful fabrics to explore religious and social belief systems.
Using large sheets of silk, wool, or canvas, Al Mansour creates installations resembling shrines, tents or mosques, through which the viewer walks.
Inside each installation there are archways, domes, sand, cushions, rugs, bowls, geometric sculptures and scents that
reflect particular female cultures.
Her work has been exhibited in the United States as well as in Saudi Arabia.
Born in Hofuf in east Saudi Arabia in 1956, Al Mansour went on to study medicine at Cairo University. She practised medicine in Saudi Arabia until 1997, when she relocated to the United States.
Mansour lives in Minnesota with her husband, a theology professor and writer.
