Designation: Algeria national football team coach
Occupation: Algeria national football team coach
Rabah Saadane is a man of his word. When he took the role of Algerian coach in 2007, his fifth time at the helm, he pledged to steer the national team to the World Cup in 2010: a jaw-droppingly ambitious promise for a team that had failed to make the cut for 24 years.
True to form though, this summer Algeria will be the only Arab country fielding a team in the South Africa World Cup — its first appearance since Saadane led the team in Mexico in 1986. Now, says Saadane, no matter the result, his players are winners.
“The objective for our young players was to reach the World Cup in the first place,” he told FIFA.com “Now that they’ve achieved that there’s no pressure on them whatsoever… our aim is to enjoy ourselves against the best teams in the world.”
England coach Fabio Capello named the Algerian team as one to watch in the World Cup. “I respect the team,” he said. “I know the value of them.”
