“Natural and man-made emergencies can threaten the lives of millions” says H.H. Sheikh Saif.

The UAE Minister of Interior has formed a strategic partnership with EPOC Messe Frankfurt for the launch of the World Security Forum 2008.

The much anticipated conference assembles an array of world class experts, highlighting recent global catastrophes, disasters and other major emergencies, providing best practice on dealing with, and recovering from such far-reaching events.

Emphasizing on the importance of the event in this part of the region, H.H. Sheikh Saif said: “Rapidly surfacing environmental concerns, fire breakouts, and their economic consequences top as the most critical matters confronted by the world today. These natural and man-made emergencies can threaten the lives of millions. The partnership mirrors the national spirit for cooperation and strategic thinking responsible for our harmony and prosperity.”

Review of international security strategies has drawn attention to the urgency in realizing environmental changes as a greater security threat than war.

The World Security Forum has been set down for UAE in October 2008 (21st and 22nd), at the Emirates Palace Hotel. Eminent politicians, heads of international organizations such as the United Nations, and emergency response services together with experts from around the globe will converge in Abu Dhabi, aiming to present on a wide spectrum of security and safety concerns faced by the world today, and to review their implications on populations, and the financial, business, and commercial markets.

Mr. Eckhard Pruy, CEO of EPOC Messe Frankfurt, thanked the Minister of Interior for his support of the event, and their initiative in its launch. He also conveyed his certainty in making the World Security Forum a major calendar event for security councils, economists and political elites.

He added: “The launch of this forum could not be timed better, considering the growing evidence of the ramifications of epidemics and other disasters. The forum would through multiple efforts, serve the single purpose of educating on emergency planning, the difficulties that are encountered as result of catastrophes and disasters, and the lessons to be drawn for the benefit of mankind.”

Recent news has confirmed that environmental changes can act as a threat multiplier for instability in some of the most volatile regions of the world. The increasing risks from these changes should be addressed now because they will almost certainly get worse if we delay, as it is an issue that threatens the peace and security of the whole planet.

“In recent years harm caused by worldly disasters has increased in both its occurrence and intensity. A large part of these unfortunate happenings can be attributed to our planet's worsening climatic conditions. The World Security Forum aims to address the consequences of these pivotal issues on the infrastructure of nations, and how important is it to prepare for preventing, and responding to these disasters,” said Mr. Pruy.

More than 10 specialists and analysts from around the world will be participating in the two-day World Security Forum, forming an expert panel comprising of a Nobel Peace Prize winner, United Nations senior officials, police and fire chiefs, a meteorologist, academics and politicians.

Amongst the topics in the papers to be delivered at the World Security Forum are Global Warming; Preparedness for Earthquake; Disease Pandemic and Epidemic; Fire Safety and Rescue; The Management of Disasters; The Effect Upon Financial Markets, Business and Commerce; and Humanitarian Aid.

The World Security Forum will be supported by EPOC Messe Frankfurt, organisers of Intersec Middle East, the region’s largest and most successful security and safety trade exhibition, scheduled for January 18 – 20, at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
