Zebra Technologies' new Zebra KDU Plus keyboard display unit for use with Zebra thermal printers is said to be ideal for applications where workspace is limited. The print solution works in conjunction with Zebra thermal printers and supplies by allowing users to generate and customise labels utilising predefined formats without the need for a dedicated computer.
The standalone accessory works seamlessly with thermal printers running EPL or ZPL printer languages, and has built-in memory to store and transfer files. It features a larger sized keyboard and keys, an enhanced digital display and more auxiliary ports than the previous model. The KDU Plus also simplifies the interface, requiring less training for users, which saves companies time and money. The device can also deliver high quality labels, wristbands, tickets and tags with Zebra printers and supplies.
Xerox has unveiled its most affordable desktop multifunction device. The Xerox WorkCentre 3119 black-and-white multifunction product has a small footprint and incorporates print, copy and colour-scanning into one inexpensive and easy-to-use device.
The Work Centre 3119 prints and copies up to 18 pages per minute. It scans colour documents at up to 4800 dpi and makes it easy to scan documents directly into a PC for editing, storing and sharing. Scans, in black and white or colour, can be saved as Word and Excel documents, PDF, JPEG and TIFF files.
The device includes cost-saving features such as a toner save mode and N-up printing, a feature that enables users to print up to four pages on one letter-sized page. The Work Centre 3119 boasts a 10,000-page monthly duty cycle and comes with a black text option that converts colour or greyscale text into easy-to-read black and white documents.
A simple front panel display and single-component supplies make the WorkCentre 3119 easy to use and maintain. In addition, the WorkCentre 3119 is ENERGY STAR compliant and has an improved Power Saver Mode.
Blue Coat has released new appliance hardware models which offer throughput performance increases said to be double or triple that of its previous models.
The new appliances run the same Blue Coat SGOS software for WAN optimisation and security and control, while a new add-in card for visibility, control and acceleration of SSL traffic now features a chip that is certified to Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 104-2.
"Enterprises and organisations are seeing substantial increases to web and SSL-encrypted traffic," said Ray Kafity, Blue Coat Middle East general manager.
"The new Blue Coat SG appliances can double or triple throughput for WAN optimisation and web security and control. In addition, the new SSL cards utilise the FIPS 104-2 compliant chip and accelerate SSL processing at the gateway or over the WAN."
The new models offer more memory than comparable current models and many of them offer larger disk space with the option to expand. They are immediately available, with list prices beginning at US$2,600 for branch office deployments, rising to $156,000 for large data centres and high-capacity internet gateways.
Elitecore Technologies, vendor of Cyberoam Unified Threat Management (UTM) appliances, has introduced a new user identity-based firewall to deliver consolidated single-point security.
The firewall enables schedule-based access to network components, assignment to application-based QoS, and application prioritisation and routing for interactive applications like VoIP. It is installed using a user-friendly browser-based installation wizard.
User identity is embedded in the firewall rule-matching criteria, unlike traditional firewalls that allow rule creation based only on source and destination IP addresses. This eliminates the need for IP addresses as intermediate components to identify and control the user, user identity binds all the security features - firewall, VPN, antivirus, antispam, intrusion detection and prevention, content filtering, bandwidth management and multiple link management - to create a single, consolidated Cyberoam unit.
The unit allows administrators to prioritise bandwidth for particular applications and assign temporary rights to users, as well as giving them the ability to change security policies dynamically if required to account for user movement.
InterFrontiers, the business development partner of NEC in the region, has launched the Powermate VL360, a powerful new desktop, in the Middle East.
The NEC Powermate VL360 has the latest generation AM2 socket that supports dual channel DDR2 memory. It supports AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors, making it quick when multitasking, and has a PCI Express 16x port that accepts the latest graphics cards on the market.
The desktop uses the NVIDIA nForce 4 chipset that includes GeForce 6150 video technology, which enables it to give users a high quality display and upscale graphic rendering addressing up to 256MB.
It can simultaneously manage two of the latest generation flat screens and its DirectX 9 compatibility gives it particularly good performance when handling 3-D images.

IBM has introduced a pair of ultrapowerful high-end machines, including the world's most powerful server, the IBM System p5 595.
The p5 595 has a 64-core processor capable of a record-breaking four million transactions a minute at an affordable cost per transaction. IBM put the leap in performance down to its new Dual Stress processor technology.
IBM also announced new technology to manage virtualisation. Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager (UAM) allows IT departments and outsourcing vendors to accurately monitor and bill for individual usage of server resources, much like utility companies bill for water and electricity.
"The new system is the first to combine immense power and linear scaling with the ability to create virtualised environments that map business functions with IT assets," says Wael Abdoush, systems group manager.
HP's new 3-in-1 Network Attached Storage (NAS) docking station has been designed for the company's business notebook PCs, and includes a data backup, recovery and file and device sharing in addition to all the conveniences of docking solutions.
This new station incorporates key desktop-like ergonomics and expandability features such as port replication, cable management, security and a variety of ports. Two network USB ports on the HP 3-in-1 NAS Docking Station enable printers, scanners or other devices to be shared across the network. Additionally, the product features six USB ports as well as MultiBay II and ExpressCard slots for future expansion. An integrated 160GB SATA hard drive is accessible as a network drive for secure and reliable data backup and recovery.
HP's Backup and Recovery Manager software allows for easy-to-use backup to prevent data loss and reduce potential downtime.
Epson has launched a compact A4 scanner for the Middle East. The Perfection V10, aimed at home and first-time scanner buyers, allows users to digitise photos and film at home, and provides high-quality output for all their scanning needs. The Perfection V10 gives a high optical resolution of 3200 dpi and scans documents and photos up to A4.
Four front-panel buttons offer access to the most commonly used scanning functions such as start, scan to email, scan to PDF, and copy.

SAP is to release all functional enhancements to mySAP ERP until 2010 in a series of optional enhancement packages. This eliminates the need for customers to continually upgrade their systems in order to take advantage of the vendor's newest technology and process innovations.
The cornerstone of the updated delivery roadmap is mySAP ERP, the 'goto' release for all customers running SAP R/3. Together with SAP Netweaver 2004s and enterprise services, mySAP ERP 2005 provides a stable platform on which users can innovate for years. Enhancement packages will be optional, giving users the flexibility and power to choose new capabilities that best meet their business needs.
Enhancement packages may contain new functionality, such as talent management and financial collaboration capabilities, innovations to streamline implementation of shared services, industry-specific enhancements, and enterprise services. The first enhancement package is due to be available in December 2006.
