Public works surge in Bahrain

Bahrain's Tender Board awarded US $878 million (BD 331 million) worth of contracts during the first six months of this year.

Bahrain's Tender Board awarded US $878 million (BD 331 million) worth of contracts during the first six months of this year.

According to the board, 932 government contracts were handed out in the period.

Among the contracts awarded were some for roads, bridges and interchange projects, as well as for infrastructure and housing.

This brings the total number of contracts awarded by the board since 2003 to 6,585, and at a value of $6 billion.

Global financial monitor, Standard and Poor's, recently gave the board an ‘A' classification for its progress towards improving transparency in government contracting. "This is confirmation that Bahrain is heading in the right direction," said Dr Abdul Hussain Mirza, chairman of the Tender Board.

Mirza added that the increase in numbers and values of tenders was a reflection of an increase in the number of government projects as well as in the reputation of the Tender Board as being fair and trustworthy.

Among the companies to have been awarded contracts since the beginning of the year are Bahrain's Nass Contracting and South Korea's Sungwon International, which won a $108 million contract in July to build a three-level interchange in Isa Town.

The board will soon award contracts for infrastructure and housing projects on major developments including North Bahrain New Town and Reef Island.
