Qatar
is to award the contract for the $1bn onshore part of the Barzan gas project in
early 2011, the Gulf state’s Energy Minister has said.

"The
tender is open now and hopefully in one month or less, or in early 2011, they
will award the contract," Al Attiyah told reporters on Tuesday in Doha,
according to the Zawya Dow Jones.

Al
Attiyah did not specify which companies were in the bidding for the $1bn
project, which will supply gas from Qatar’s North Field.

The
project is a partnership between state-run Qatar Petroleum and US-based Exxon
Mobil Corp and in November 2009 the engineering, procurement and construction
of the offshore element of the project was awarded to Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Attiyah
also denied media claims that the project, which is valued at around $1.7bn in
total, will be delayed until 2015.

"The
first phase of the Barzan project is to supply about 1.4 billion cubic feet a
day (gross) of sales gas for the Qatar market. First gas flow is planned for
2014. The project team is currently evaluating EPC contract bid," Exxon
Mobil is quoted as saying in a statement.
