Gulf state emerges as shock 2022 bid winner after beating off bids from Australia and USA
Qatar is to stage the 2022 World Cup, becoming the the first ever Muslim and Arab country to host the cup. The dramatic announcement was made by FIFA President Sepp Blatter on Thursday night, after beating off bids from Japan/Korea, Australia and the USA.
Australia had been favourites, with concerns over hosting the event during the summer in Qatar. However the country has promised to build a number of air conditioned soccer stadiums.
There was also disappointment for England after the 2018 World Cup went to Russia.
Earlier, Prince William, David Beckham and UK Prime Minister David Cameron had visited Zurich to try and persuade FIFA delegates to back the English bid, and many experts believed England would win the bid.
Congratulations to Qatar, however it is important to recognise that without the inspirational leadership and vision of His Highness Shiekh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Qatar would not have had the courage to bid for the world cup.
Qatar winning the world cup is a victory for His Highness first, Qatar second
Congratulations to His Highness Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
We are absolutely thrilled that our lovely nation has got the award for the 2022 FIFA championships. The generous attitude and noble vision of the Qatari people is naturally responsible for this achievement. Congratulations to all in Qatar and in the Arab countries.

Great achievement for Qatar and also for the region. Hearty congratulations to the Rulers of Qatar and it's people! This is also a validation of how Qatar has been very smartly making their mark on a global level.
Football is a universal game and taking it to the gulf makes it more universal.
Notwithstanding what others may feel and the seeming weather disadvantage, i think the game will be better for it and the world will be amazed at the spectacle awaiting them.
congrats to Qatar!!!!!

Well done Qatar, what an achievement. I have to admit, it was not expected.
Congratulations to the Bid Team in their hard work bidding for this event. No one will doubt Qatar's passion in wanting to host the 2022 World Cup. They deserve it and I'm sure they will host a remarkable event that will not be forgotten.

THIS is a victorious and joyful moment for each and everyone in all Arab nations and middle-east as a whole. this moment is a pride of every Arab citizen and every expat who loves this place as much as our home lands. Hats off to the Qatar Leadership. No one would have expected this, yet they have the will and way to go for this challenge and once again showed the world that nothing is impossible. I am definitely excited to watch my first FIFA match. I will be quite older by then.
