The first locally made video game - exclusively for mobile devices will be launched next month
The world’s first Qatar-produced video game for mobile devices will be launched next month.
The game will be called Giddam and features four main characters wearing local traditional attire.
I was devised by Munera Al-Dosari, Faraj Abdulla and Fatima Al-Kuwari, who formed Girnaas Studio with incubation support from ictQatar.
The characters will be called Strawberry, Rashid, Big Mama and Ali, will be accessible as a free to download game for Android and Apple IOS and will be unveiled next month at the newly opened Gaming Lounge in Al Sadd Sports Club.
“We believe that it is very important to have local games that reflect our rich heritage. We were encouraged to start Girnaas because of our disappointment of the lack of local games that reflect the uniqueness of this region,” co founder Al-Kuwari told Arabian Business.
“We want to be able to find and play games that are relevant to us. We also want to use gaming as a platform to export our rich heritage and stories to the whole world, starting by the younger generation here in Qatar and the region.”
How did I know that it would be "local" characters in the game. What a stretch of imagination.
I am guessing because 4 locals created that game. I am only guessing here !!
So, because 4 locals designed it, it is absolutely impossible to design a viable entertainment app that DOESNT center around abayas and camels? I guess game designers should only develop games that are themed directly in accordance to their culture? Angry Birds designer was Finnish....perhaps Angry birds should have been centered around laplander dogs and moose and lots of snow.
Revel in your culture but not everything has to be based on khanduras and niqabs in pop culture. Freej, first local animation....Arabic culture...first Emirati produced film - Djinn...about Arabic folkore. Americans aren't all rugged cowboys and brits aren't all martini sipping double agents.
I'm going a bit extreme but even though I love where I live and its culture, but I get frustrated with the lack of scope, innovation and ability to get outside of the stereotyping in pop culture that is, actually, important to the GCC. I'd love to see them make a film, game, song that steps outside of the obvious.
what an opening statement- THE WORLDS FIRST "Qatar" produced..as if it is of such significance to the world
Actually Qatar is of significant insignificance to the world.....if you exclude their money that is.
