A worker was killed on Sunday and two others injured when a mound of excavated soil fell on them at a construction site in the Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City, it was reported.

Qatar's Ministry of Interior has launched an investigation into the accident, Gulf Times reported, citing a statement from the country's Public Works Authority, also known as Ashghal.

It said the two rescued workers were taken to the Hamad General Hospital for treatment.

“The accident was caused by the collapse of a side of an excavation location, causing soil to fall on the workers,” Ashghal said in a statement.

“Ashghal is extremely sorry for this tragic accident, following which work has been stopped at the project site and an extensive investigation started from Ashghal’s side to know the reasons and identify the responsible parties and hold them accountable in case there was any failure from their side,” it added in the statement published by the newspaper.

All safety procedures implemented on site by the project contractor and consultant will be reviewed, and any necessary action taken, Ashghal added.
