ictQatar launches Qatar National Broadband Network Company in bid to speed up services roll-out
Technology chiefs in Qatar announced on Sunday that a new company has been set up to fast forward plans for nationwide high speed broadband services.
The Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQatar) said the Qatar National Broadband Network Company (Q.NBN) had a mandate to accelerate the rollout of a nationwide Fibre to the Home (FTTH) network.
Q.NBN has been charged with achieving 95 percent coverage to homes and businesses across Qatar by 2015.
"The Qatar National Broadband Network represents a bold step forward in Qatar's drive to be a leading knowledge economy," said Dr Hessa Al-Jaber, Secretary general, ictQatar.
"Ubiquitous access to a high-speed network is essential to business development, economic growth, innovation and enhanced government services for our citizens."
The government-led initiative was developed in consultation with existing network operators, Qtel and Vodafone, and will support the development of their broadband service offerings, a statement said.
Q.NBN is a fully independent company operating within the existing laws and under licence conditions issued by ictQatar, the statement added.
ictQatar is planning a range of initiatives to drive demand and uptake for broadband in the country.
