Qtel says its mobile users are up 35%

Impressive first-quarter figures reveal that users in Oman have more than doubled.

Qatar Telecommunications Co. (Qtel) said the number of its moblie phone customers in Qatar rose 35% in the first quarter and more than doubled in Oman.

Qtel had almost 1.024 million mobile phone customers in Qatar on March 31, more users than the nation's population, it said in a statement. Revenue from the services rose to 727 million riyals ($199.8 million) compared with 578 million riyals in the year-earlier period, it said.

In Oman, where it operates through its Nawras brand, it had 670,000 customers by March 31, it said.

Revenue from the operations almost doubled to 170 million riyals, it said.
