Zayed Charity Run unites thousands in Rio as Emiratis dominate podium and spread humanitarian impact

The Zayed Charity Run made its South American debut in Rio de Janeiro with over 3,000 participants, including 200 from the UAE.

Rio de Janeiro played host to the second leg of the 2025–2026 Zayed Charity Run, drawing over 3,000 participants from around the globe, including more than 200 from the UAE. The event marked the initiative’s debut in South America and turned heads with a spirited mix of sport, solidarity, and cross‑cultural goodwill.

The UAE contingent celebrated a resounding victory in the 5 km men’s race with a clean sweep of the podium. Rashid Al Naqbi took gold, Saud Al Zaabi claimed silver, and Saif Al Alawi completed the trio with bronze. Across all categories, Emirati runners collected five medals – one gold, two silver, and two bronze, while local Brazilian competitors earned the remaining seven.

Winners were honoured in ceremonies led by His Excellency Sharif Essa AlSuwaidi, UAE Ambassador to Brazil, and Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Mohamed Helal Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Higher Organizing Committee of the Zayed Charity Run, in the presence of senior Rio de Janeiro officials.

The Rio edition reinforced the Run’s position as a globally recognised humanitarian sporting event, dedicated to weaving connections across communities. Proceeds from this iteration will benefit Rio Solidario, a Brazilian non‑profit working with vulnerable children, women and families – underscoring the Run’s mission to translate athletic endeavour into tangible social impact.

Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Mohamed Helal Al Kaabi expressed his pride in the event’s success, saying: “We are proud of the outstanding success achieved by this Run, both in its humanitarian impact and organizational excellence. The remarkable public engagement reflects the global stature the Zayed Charity Run has reached. Brazil represents a special milestone within our three new international destinations, following Beijing last month and ahead of Budapest in May 2026.” He added: “Since its inception in 2001, the values of generosity that this Run upholds have been the foundation of its growth and success, highlighting the UAE’s leading role in humanitarian causes and global cooperation. The Zayed Charity Run has become a symbol of our nation’s commitment to giving and solidarity among peoples.”

His Excellency Sharif Essa AlSuwaidi praised the host city’s involvement and institutional backing, noting: “Rio de Janeiro witnessed a powerful and inspiring scene that united sport and humanity, reflecting the depth of relations between the UAE and Brazil. Hosting the Run here carries special diplomatic significance, strengthening our strategic ties and opening new avenues for collaboration in humanitarian, sporting, and cultural fields.” He continued: “We were deeply moved by the enthusiastic participation of the Brazilian community, from professionals and amateurs to families, and by the support of key local entities such as the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro and the Getulio Vargas Foundation. Dedicating the proceeds to Rio Solidario truly reflects the UAE’s commitment to compassion, solidarity, and supporting communities wherever they are.”

The Rio leg concluded with a call to action for the next edition: the Abu Dhabi Run, set to take place on 29 November 2025, is now open for registration. Organisers have invited sports and charity enthusiasts to join and carry forward the spirit of this national humanitarian endeavour.

Since its inception in 2001, the Zayed Charity Run has grown into a global movement, engaging hundreds of thousands of runners and raising meaningful support for hospitals, charities and research institutions, an enduring tribute to the UAE’s values of generosity and global outreach.
