Dubizzle, the UAEs largest online classifieds platform, has revealed that six in every 10 of its users have engaged in the second-hand economy in the past six months, either through buying or selling.

With over two million monthly active users, Dubizzle said it had live listings worth more than AED352 million ($95.8 mllion) as at the end of April - the equivalent to the cost of a private jet.

It said Dubai is the largest market, with AED166 million worth of live listings, followed by Abu Dhabi with AED88 million, Sharjah with AED58 million, and Ajman with almost AED40 million.

Its latest poll showed that 36 percent of respondents sold a used item in the past six-months, with electronics (32 percent) the most sold items in the second-hand market, followed by home and garden equipment (25 percent), child and baby items (9 percent), sport and outdoor items (7 percent), fashion and beauty items (7 percent), business and industrial supplies (5 percent), and art, books, DVDs, toys and games (4 percent).

When asked about the main reasons behind selling used items, respondents highlighted that a key motivator was the quick turnaround of cash.

When all respondents were asked to estimate how many unused items they have in their homes, 72 percent said that they had one to 10 items, 13 percent said 11-20, 4 percent said 21-30, and 9 percent said that they had over 30 items.

More than half (56 percent) of the respondents believe that these items could be worth up to AED1,000, the poll also showed.

It also revealed that 44 percent of poll respondents purchased a used item in the last six months, with electronics (39 percent) the most purchased items, followed by home and garden equipment (33 percent), sport and outdoor items (6 percent), child and baby items (5 percent), and fashion and beauty items (3 percent).

More than half of the respondents said they made these purchases to upgrade their lifestyle.

“When looking at the items being sold and bought through second-hand platforms, whether through dubizzle, social media or print classifieds listings, big ticket items tend to get the majority share," said Salma Anabtawi, head of Customer Experience at Dubizzle.

"However, the second-hand market has a large number of items across different categories and price ranges, which does not only offer value for money but also has environmental benefits,” she added.
