The reduced operating hours do not apply to Carrefour supermarkets
Carrerfour hypermarkets will now be open from 8 AM until 8 PM following a government mandate amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it was announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, Carrefour said that the reduced operating hours do not apply to Carrefour supermarkets, which will remain open at normal hours.
“Carrefour remains committed to its customers’ safety and wellbeing and has introduced extra hygiene and social distancing measures for customers shopping at its store,” the statement added.
Earlier in March, Majid Al Futtaim – which operates the Carrefour franchise in the UAE – announced that it was deploying more than 1,000 leisure, entertainment and cinema employees on a temporary basis to join Carrefour amid heightened demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
In a separate interview with Arabian Business, Majid Al Futtaim Retail CEO Hani Weiss said that Carrefour’s online orders have spiked 300 percent year-on-year as a result of people shopping to keep themselves well-stocked at home amid the pandemic.
“One of the things I’m proudest of is that the team was agile enough to transform 2,000 metres in one of our stores – which wasn’t performing very well – into a fulfillment centre that can cater to 2,000 additional orders,” he said. “We had to do that in less than 5 days.”
