Iraqi-born television host and author Zainab Salbi began addressing humanitarian issues across the world after watching a documentary on victims of sexual assault in Bosnia. Shortly afterwards, she and her new husband travelled to Bosnia instead of enjoying a relaxing honeymoon. She then launched US-based Women for Women International to help female victims of war and conflict.

Despite leaving the organisation, Salbi has pursued a similar path in her Arabic talk show Nida’a, covering typically taboo topics. Salbi is also the editor-at-large at Women in The World, run in association with The New York Times.
