We find out if this treatment is indeed ‘ideal for the sports enthusiast’
The key to a good sports massage, we have always felt, is not what you tell your therapist about your body, but what you don’t tell them. By this we mean when you point out the crick in your neck, but you are not even aware of the large knot behind your shoulder blade until the therapist begins to work on it.
The opposite of this is too often true in Dubai, when some therapists seem to be going through the usual routine without much care for what you need (true story – we once peeked out from the mask to find a therapist checking their mobile phone with one hand). At 1847, not only do staff ask you about problem areas, they spend much of the treatment hunting them out.
The spa in the JBR branch is located above a small, busy open-plan salon that belies the more spacious treatment rooms at the top of a winding staircase. Staff were courteous and welcoming and treatment rooms were tidy and tranquil. We went for the Muscle Melt Massage – in truth a Balinese massage with a catchy title – during which we were subjected to reassuringly painful pressure on numerous parts of our back and shoulders, expertly relieving areas of tension we didn’t even know we had.
The only drawback during the 60-minute treatment was it didn’t leave enough time for existing problem areas, such as tight hamstrings, to be given the requisite attention – and too much of the treatment was spent pulling our hair (why do they do this?). Nevertheless, we departed much more supple than we arrived.
This treatment is billed as “‘ideal for the sports enthusiast” which, in a way, is the perfect description because – as with all good sports – 60 minutes simply didn’t feel long enough. We recommend opting for the 90-minute treatment and by the final whistle, we expect you will be feeling like a champion.
