In a bid to stay competitive in the smartphone market, Research In Motion (RIM) has followed in the footsteps of Apple and Nokia to launch an online application store for BlackBerry users.

BlackBerry App World, which is immediately available to users in Britain, Canada and the U.S., can be accessed over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

It will sell a mix of personal and business applications for BlackBerry customers from categories such as entertainment, games, maps, news and travel, but there’s no word yet on when it will be made available in the Middle East.

“The BlackBerry platform provides a truly unparalleled mobile experience for millions of people and we are thrilled today to enhance that experience with a new app store that helps connect consumers with developers and carriers,” said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO.

While application store ventures for both Apple’s iPhone and Nokia’s Ovi offer developers 70% of the revenue from each piece of software, RIM plans to offer a generous 80%.
