RRO rolls out its well-oiled concept

While RRO, an Indian food producer specialising in edible oils is already one of the best known food producer's in its home market, the company is less well known in the Middle East. But after introducing some of its oils to the UAE just a couple of years ago, the company is keen to become a major force in the Middle East's burgeoning FMCG sector.

RRO, which is exhibiting at Gulfood for the second time, is already making serious inroads in the region. The company has seen sales in the UAE and Oman grow by about 40% since their regional debut, and managing director Riyad R. Oomerbhoy is convinced that this is just the beginning.

"We have had an amazing response," he told Gulfood Times. "The products are already available in key retail accounts including Carrefour, Spinneys and co-operative supermarkets in the UAE."

Oomerbhoy also views Gulfood as a key pillar in the company's strategy to develop its export business. "We launched our products in Dubai a couple of years ago and we took part in Gulfood last year. We had a very encouraging response to our products," he said. "We decided to take it further this year and to expand our business in other GCC nations. We would like to use Dubai and Gulfood as a platform to launch this initiative.

He added that Dubai is also a useful launching pad for North Africa and East Africa, Pakistan and ex-Soviet Union countries.

Oomerbhoy describes RRO, which was established by his great great-grandfather in the 1860s, as a "premium foods company."

He added that the business, which markets breakfast cereals and cheeses as well as olive, sesame, and mustard oils, is also keen to expand its portfolio in the Middle East, as well as expanding geographically.

Furthermore, Oomerbhoy is optimistic that Gulfood 2007 will benefit the company. "The exposure at last year's Gulfood was very useful," he said. "Just in terms of getting our company and products across to a lot of people, from a presentation point of view it was a great success for us."
