Samsung previews Blue Earth eco-friendly, touchscreen handset with built in solar panel
Samsung has debuted the world’s first eco-friendly, solar powered touchscreen phone at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona.
The Blue Earth handset is intended to be both environmentally friendly and to promote environmental awareness with users.
The phone includes a built solar panel on the back of the handset, which Samsung says will provide enough charge to make calls anytime, along with an energy efficient charger with 5 Star Energy rating for conventional charging.
The handset also includes an ‘eco mode’, which will automatically set screen brightness, backlight, and Bluetooth settings for maximum energy efficiency.
A built-in pedometer also enables an ‘eco-walk’ that counts the users steps to calculate how much carbon emission is saved through walking instead of taking motor transport for journeys.
The handset is constructed from recycled PCM plastic, and contains no harmful substances such as Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium and Phthalate.
JK Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Communication Division of Samsung Electronics commented: “Samsung’s ‘The Blue Earth Dream’ demonstrates our small but meaningful commitments for the future and our environment. We are committed to achieving the highest eco-status with our customers and business partners by providing the best eco-products and promoting eco-activities.”
