The Red Sea Mall, Jeddah's biggest shopping centre, has announced the start of its largest expansion project.

The SR200 million ($53.3 million) plan to expand buildings and to develop the services is expected to be finished within 18-24 months.

It is expected to cover an area of 145,000 square metres, which will contain 30,000 sq m of gross leasable area including a 4,000 sq m outdoor shopping area that will include restaurants and international brands.

The new expansion will also increase the number of parking spaces to 1,400.

Sheikh Saleh Bin Mahfouz, chairman of the Red Sea Mall Markets Co Ltd, said: "The Red Sea Mall expansion strategy is the largest mall expansion in Saudi Arabia. The expansion will add even more international brands and entertainment facilities, and underscores our unwavering commitment to enhancing the Red Sea Mall experience for our valued visitors and tenants."

Mohammed Alawi, CEO of Red Sea Markets Co Ltd, said the massive expansion was necessary in order to cater to the growing demand for commercial rental space.

"There is a huge demand for commercial rental space at the Red Sea Mall. We have a long waiting list of potential tenants, and this list increases on average by 8 percent annually."

The expansion has been carefully planned to ensure that retailers and visitors are not inconvenienced during construction, he added.
