Saudi man's orthopaedic belt causes security alert at mosque

A man wearing a bulging belt and talking on a mobile phone near a Saudi mosque has reportedly sparked a security scare as worshippers feared he was a suicide bomber.

After police were called to the scene, it was revealed the man was wearing a large orthopaedic belt, which had been prescribed by his doctor for back pain following a road accident, Arabic news site Ajel.sa reported.

He told police he was using his phone to call his family after his car broke down.

Security concerns have heightened in the kingdom following several terrorist attacks, including at mosques.

A Saudi also has been identified as the suicide bomber who killed 27 people at a Shia mosque in Kuwait on June 28.
