Saudi power giant awards $506m contracts

The Saudi Electricity Company on Sunday said it has awarded two power projects to Alfanar Construction totalling more than SR1.9bn ($506m).

The contracts are for the reinforcement of Hail 2 Power Plant - Extension 3 and the construction of substations to power a planned railway, the company said in a statement.

The Hail 2 Power Plant project is aimed at increasing the generation capacity of electricity to meet the future load demand. The first two units will be online in August 2012.

The second project will supply power to the upcoming double-track high speed Harmain railway and will include the construction of six new 380kV Substations.

All six substations are expected to be completed and put into service within 24 Months.

Alfanar Construction is a unit of Alfanar Group and its latest projects include work on Hail 2 - Extension 2 Power Plant which is expected to be completed within months, and the Sharourah Power Plant in the far southern region of the kingdom that was recently completed.
