UPDATE 1: 13-year-old was caught in school with camera-equipped phone.
A 13-year-old schoolgirl in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 90 lashes and two months in prison for carrying to her classroom a mobile phone equipped with a camera, according to a report.
Iran's television network, Press TV reported on Thursday that the girl, who has not been named, is sentenced to 90 lashes in her school in front of her classmates followed by two months in detention.
The sentences come after she was caught with a cell phone equipped with camera. The girl had assaulted her headmistress after being caught with the gadget which is banned in girl schools, the UK-based Dail Mail quoted Saudi's Al Watan daily report as saying.
Earlier this week it was reported that health officials have
closed down an “illegal” women’s fitness centre
attached to a hospital in Jeddah.
Gyms or fitness clubs for women continue to be illegal in the kingdom, despite the growing popularity of underground venues.
“Anyone who violates regulations governing the running of health facilities would be punished severely because this involves people’s health,” Muhammad Abdul Jawad, director of the Medical Licensing Administration, told Arab News.
Really reading the punishments in Saudi is like reading a book about the Middle Ages (hundreds of years ago) in the West. When is Saudi going to become more "humane" in its punishments ? I am all for discipline as that is what is lacking in the UK , BUT 90 lashes is not something should be done in 21st Century. Why not take the phone, punish the Phone company for giving her the phone and make her do extra studies on the need for discipline in schools or similar ??
I'd like to lash the person who handed out this sentence. Saudi's really appear primitive to the outside world. BTW, I am a Muslim.
Because the government make money from the phone company so they will never punish them...
Future generations will laugh at the stupidity of mankind. For the women of that and those countries, allowing this kind of treatment, stand up and fight back.
Prophet Muhammad [SAWS] will never agree to such punishment.
I don’t believe that the story is telling the whole account. She was sentenced for hitting her principal, after she caught with the cell phone "Reference BBC". Even then the sentence of humiliating her in front of her class mate is preposterous and will result in psychological hatred against her peer , school and religion.
why is iran tv reporting this? iran has a similar record.
I would suggest that Saudi government should first confirm if the news of such sentence is true. If it is true then I would request the sentence awarding authority to let everybody know the reference from the Holy Quran and Hadith, which have been followed. Also if the ruling is only applicable for the schoolgirls or all the females in the Kingdom and such for the whole world?
I really do not understand the very logic of such Harsh punishment to School going Kids. The ideal punsihment should be a proper counselling and kind advice. No body has a right to punish a kid who is still learning the basic of society. It is the elders responsibility of guiding the youngster and making them a good humanbeing. Dont teach them violence!
I agree with Rouzbeh, the news is "incomplete" at best. I am sure Saudi govt is not so stupid. The girl must have done something more heinous crime. Besides, no human being would pass such a judgement to a 13 year old female. Everything sounds mischievous. Tribal judgement of Dark Ages!!
