Saudi shops selling 'Viagra' drink

Health experts have warned any increase in sexual performance is only psychological or due to the energy boost from the drink’s calories

Saudi shops have begun selling drinks called ‘Local Viagra’, purporting to increase sexual ability, Arab News has reported.

Health experts have warned Saudis the drinks do not meet their expectations and/or could cause harm.

Arab News said some shoppers had questioned why authorities had not banned the drinks, which are also marketed as contributing to a happy marital life.

Saudi Society for Food and Nutrition vice chairman Dr Khalid Ali Almadani said there was no scientific basis for the claims.

Almadani pointed out that the number of calories in some of the advertised juices give energy, and consumers are deceived into believing that their sexual performance has improved.

“This phenomenon could be the result of psychological effects and to the promotions and advertising for the products,” he said.

“Food is like fuel to humans, and helps them to perform their daily tasks, but treatment shouldn’t be limited to particular meals or drinks.”

The ‘Viagra’ drinks follows reports a halal sex shop has been approved for Makkah.

Moroccan-Dutch entrepreneur Abdelaziz Aouragh told Arabic news channel Alyaoum24 the shop, which would sell items such as body products, perfumes and candles, would be fully Shariah compliant and had been approved by a Saudi Arabian cleric with whom he consulted.

However, he later denied it would be a “halal sex shop”.
