State television reported that shells fired by Yemeni Houthi fighters landed near the frontier
Saudi Arabia suspended all schools on Tuesday in the southern Najran region, near the border with Yemen, state television reported, after shells fired by Yemeni Houthi fighters landed near the frontier.
"The Houthi militias have targeted the border region in Najran with mortars," Brigadier-General Ahmed al-Asiri, spokesman for a Saudi-led coalition waging a mostly air campaign against the Houthis, said in comments carried by al-Ekhbariyah television.
He said the shelling reflected the state of chaos the Houthis felt after nearly six weeks of air strikes on the Iranian-allied fighters who dominate Yemen.
"The armed forces are carrying out their duties in confronting the aggression by the Houthis and today's action will not pass without punishment," he added.
Witnesses in Yemen have said Saudi forces have shelled the Yemeni side of the border after the Shi'ite militia fired several rounds towards Saudi territories.
