Seagate today launched the FreeAgent family of external ‘data movers’ (hard drives) in the Middle East, marking its first major move into the branded consumer market.
The world’s biggest hard drive firm, Seagate, today launched the FreeAgent family of external ‘data movers’ (hard drives) in the Middle East, marking its first major move into the branded consumer storage market.
Three separate product lines were unveiled; the FreeAgent Pro, FreeAgent Go and FreeAgent Desktop.
The FreeAgent Pro line targets ‘prosumers’ interested in accessing and sharing their digital content when on the go. FreeAgent Pro drives feature a interchangeable modular interface system that lets users use either the standard USB2.0 or eSATA interface or swap it for dual FireWire 400 ports. Capacities range from 320Gbytes to 750Gbytes.
The FreeAgent Go line is positioned as a solution for mobile consumers and includes software that makes it possible to easily synchronise internet bookmarks, passwords, e-mails and more between your PC and mobile drive. Capacities for this line range from 12Gbytes to 160Gbytes.
Lastly, the FreeAgent Desktop line is the firm’s standard storage expansion solution, which targets users interested in simply adding more capacity to their desktop or notebook PCs.
Speaking at today’s launch conference, Andreas Hasse, head of retail sales for Seagate EMEA, explained that both Seagate and Maxtor’s products would be sold alongside each other in stores. With Maxtor, the firm is targeting techie “rational users” interested in data backup and protection, whereas the Seagate-branded products target what Hasse called “emotional users”. In other words, users interested in enhancing their lifestyles.
“With the announcement of our FreeAgent data movers, we’re connecting with consumers in the Middle East on an emotional level by giving them the lifestyle tools to help them move, work and play with their content virtually anytime, anywhere,” explained Hasse.
Seagate is offering a five-year warranty period on all three lines and claims it is the first hard drive company in the world to provide this with external hard drives. The products are expected in stores around the region by March.
